To format and style the text in a wiki page, you will use wiki syntax. This syntax is similar to HTML or other markup languages. It uses common characters in uncommon ways (or character combinations that are not normally used together) and provides them with a special meaning. Sure you can just paste text without any formatting and save it as a Wiki page, but that page would look really ugly. It would not have things like headings, lists, text decoration etc.

Don't panic because you don't have to learn wiki syntax by heart or enter it manually. When you start editing a page, a toolbar will appear on the top which functions similar to those in commonly used computer word processors like Microsoft Word. You just click on it and easily apply formatting to the text.
